Laptops Comparison

My laptop picks are based on looks and features. Specifications and numbers are great but not really important as all the laptops here fall into one of the categories.

IT Show 2017 @ Suntec from 16 to 19 March 2017.

(1) Asus Zenbook 3 ($1,998 or $2,598)
Incredibly thin at just 1.2 cm, strong and light at just 910 gm. It manages to fit in a 12.5" screen and Harman Kardon speakers. Available in Navy Blue, Quartz Grey and Rose Gold, the yellow gold binding around the laptop is enhanced by a gold back lit keyboard.

(2) HP Spectre 13.3 (from $2,399)
Touted as the world's thinnest laptop at just 1.02 cm, it has a 13" screen and Bang & Olufsen speakers. When I first saw this I thought it was a collaboration with the James Bond movie franchise, Spectre being the latest movie. It's not, HP's latest product is Spectre 360 laptop that allows you to rotate the keyboard 360 degrees. So back to this beautiful copper and matte black laptop that features jewel box hinges and a copper backlit keyboard. It weighs 1088 gm, a lucky number for most people.

(3) Dell Alienware 17 Gaming Laptop ($2,999)
The latest model from Dell's Alien ware range of gaming laptops, 17 refers to the screen length. This gaming laptop is Virtual Reality ready with its NVIDIA® VRWorks technology. It is enabled for stereo, microphone, camera, etc for group play. Back-lit keyboard and trackpad that is customizable to the user. Visually stunning, I love the rainbow back lights. This laptop is also available in 13" and 15".

(4) Acer Predator 17 ($3.498 or $4,598)
Acer also has a gaming laptop, 17 refers to screen length. The main selling point is its FrostCore cooling technology that keeps the laptop running smoothly even during long haul gaming sessions. It's got Dolby Audio for game immersion purposes and enough ports for microphone etc but is not enabled for VR yet. Red & blue back lit keyboard.

(5) Apple MacBook Pro (from $3,388)
The new 13" and 15" models features Touch Bar and Touch ID (or favorites list) allowing faster access to your usual sites. It's still thin at about 1.5cm, boasts bigger trackpad and increased visuals (25% more colours than the standard sRGB, 67% higher contrast ratio, 67% brighter display). We all love Mac Books so this is no exception, available in silver or grey.

(6) Microsoft Surface Pro 4 (from $1,399)
It's a tablet that can replace your laptop, the screen changes from monitor to touchpad. It has a screen (12.3") almost as big as an Apple Ipad (12.9"). The built-in kickstand allows your screen to rest at almost any angle. Dolby Audio premium speakers.

(7) Lenovo Yoga Book with Windows OS (from $1,999)
This 2-in-1 tablet lets you sketch with a stylus or real pen and has a halo keyboard that appears when you need it and disappears when you don't. It's got a 10.1" screen, Dolby audio premium, Android enabled.

(8) Toshiba Qosmio X70 (for enthusiasts, enquire for price)
3D laptop that comes with glasses. Capability to convert movies from 2D to 3D as well as a 3D web camera to capture 3D images. Harman Kardon speakers and Dolby Advanced Audio. It has a 17.3" screen and red back lit keyboard.

(9) LG Gram ($1,899 or $2,199)
Touted as the world's lightest 15.6" laptop at 980 gm and it comes in only gold colour. Tough enough to withstand constant travel. The body has a unique tapered design. This may be 70 gm heavier than Asus Zenbook 3 but the screen is 3.1" bigger, a huge plus point for heavy laptop users.

(10) WMP AVR (from $429)
There are all these new laptop brands like MSI, WMP, Xiaomi etc. So I picked WMP's Marvel Avengers laptop for affordability. It's a 2-in-1 touchscreen laptop with detachable keyboard and 10.1" screen. It's even got custom wallpaper and icons to fit into the Avengers theme.

(Bonus) Samsung Gaming Monitors (from $448)
Samsung stopped producing its Vaio laptops in 2014 but it still makes PC Monitors and only that! This is its new curved gaming monitor that comes in various sizes. It's flicker free, has an eye saver mode, AMD free sync and game mode. You're supposed to buy 3 and place it side by side with your own keyboard and mouse in the center. How about Havit gaming keyboard and mouse in white or black with LED back lights?
