This is the realized payoff to sewing all those clothes - salvaging old clothing. Not just changing a broken zip or missing buttons, although those things no longer distress me. Its about making my old clothes still work for me now.
Clothes with ripped parts (e.g. holes) or stained (e.g. hair dye) get a second lease of life through cutting and re-attaching in new ways. I suggest you collect all discarded items and do it in a single effort, its much easier that way.
